Who is the first person you tell?

Something good happens and there is a moment before anyone else knows. It does not last long.

Then you reach for the phone, and the name is already there. You did not decide it just now. Somewhere along the way you worked out who would be pleased without having to arrange their face first, and that is who you go to.

It is not always the person you are closest to on paper. Sometimes it is not even someone you see much any more. It is whoever has form for being glad.

Some of us have had to change the name over the years. One or two of us still go to reach for the old one.
