The Daily Question
What did you want to be,
before you knew what jobs were?
Before you knew what a career was, you knew what you wanted to be.
Not the sensible answer you learned to give later. The first one. It usually came from watching somebody do something and thinking: that. A vet, because of a dog. A lorry driver, because of the height of the cab. Whoever turned up at the house and fixed the thing nobody else could fix.
There was no salary attached to it and no ladder. You had seen a life being lived and liked the look of it.
Most of us went another way, and that is usually fine. But it is worth knowing what the first answer was, because it was the only one you gave before anybody told you what was realistic.
So — what did you want to be, before you knew what jobs were?
