The Quiet Hour
The nights are drawing in.
Let them.
The evenings are drawing in. Not long ago it was still light at this hour. Now the curtains are closed before tea and the lamps are on.
Something in us resists it. We are used to measuring a good day by how much got done, and the dark coming early feels like time taken away.
But people have always lived by seasons. There was a time for sowing and a time for bringing in, and then a time when the fields were left alone and everybody stayed nearer the fire. Nobody called that laziness. It was the time of year, and it was given as much as the others were.
You are allowed a slower season. Let the dark come early. Put the kettle on, and let the day be over when it is over.
This page is not help, and I am not qualified to give it.
If you are struggling, please ring one of these. Both are better at it than anything on the internet, this page included.
This one is on ordinary days. There are three others.
