“In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, LORD, make me dwell in safety.” — Psalm 4:8 (NIV)

David wrote this with his troubles unresolved. Read the psalm from the start and you find a man asking for relief from distress, surrounded by people who have turned on him. Nothing in his circumstances has changed by verse eight. What has changed is where he has decided to put the weight of it down.

That is worth noticing tonight. Peace at the end of a day is not the same as everything being sorted. Most nights it cannot be. It is a decision about what you carry into the dark and what you leave until morning.

Whatever is unfinished tonight, it will keep.
