The Daily Pause

A comma, not a full stop — the breath inside the sentence rather than the end of it.

Something on your mind? Say it here

Sunday 18 October

Today has not started yet. Here is last night, until eight.

The Quiet Hour

Some seasons, somebody else
has to believe for you.

There are seasons when believing anything good is too much to manage. That things will come right. That you are worth the bother. That God, if there is a God, is anywhere near.

In those seasons, other people often do the believing for you. A grandmother who said she would keep praying whether you liked it or not. A friend who kept ringing when you stopped answering. Someone who talked about next summer as if of course you would be in it.

You did not have to agree with them. They held it anyway, until your hands were free to take it back.

If you cannot believe much tonight, that is all right. Somebody may well be holding it for you. And one day you may do the same for someone else.

Who this is

I’m Andrew. A husband, a father, and a funeral director in Belfast.

I also have days I find hard — my mood, my head, and some days just life. Most of them look perfectly ordinary from the outside.

I started this because what helped me on those days was almost never advice. It was one honest sentence at the right moment, or being asked something worth thinking about by someone who actually wanted to hear the answer.

That is all this is trying to be. It is for everyone — whatever you believe, and whatever kind of week you are having.

One thing worth saying plainly. I set what this page is — the voice, the rules, the things it will never do. The three pieces are written to that every morning by a machine, and every quotation is checked before it goes anywhere. Nothing goes out that I would not put my name to.

No judgement. Just love.

The Daily Pause

365 days to pause, reflect and grow

One short page for every day of the year: a line to carry with you, a few honest paragraphs, a question to sit with and one small thing to try. An ebook first, for phone, tablet or computer.

It exists because some days you want the pause without the scroll.
