The Daily Pause

The Daily Question

What is the best meal you ever had,
and who were you with?

Ask anyone about the best meal they ever had and they rarely start with the food. They start with where they were. A kitchen table at a grandparent's. Chips out of the paper on a cold sea wall. Something simple after a long day outdoors, when anything at all would have tasted good.

The food matters less than you would think. What people remember is the company, the weather, the tiredness, the feeling that for an hour nothing else needed doing.

Hardly any of the best meals were the expensive ones. They were the ones with the right people round the table.

So — what is the best meal you ever had, and who were you with?

The Middle of the Day

Give back the thing
you borrowed.

There is probably something in your house that belongs to somebody else. A dish that came round with a meal in it. A book lent two summers ago. A drill, a ladder, a coat left behind after a visit.

It is a small thing, and it takes up more room than it should. Every time you see it, a quiet voice says you really must. Then the day moves on.

Give it back this weekend. No speech needed, and no apology longer than a sentence. Most people will be glad to see you, and gladder that you thought of it.

Loose ends are not heavy on their own. It is the number of them that wears you down. Tie one off today.

Who this is

I’m Andrew. A husband, a father, and a funeral director in Belfast.

I also have days I find hard — my mood, my head, and some days just life. Most of them look perfectly ordinary from the outside.

I started this because what helped me on those days was almost never advice. It was one honest sentence at the right moment, or being asked something worth thinking about by someone who actually wanted to hear the answer.

That is all this is trying to be. It is for everyone — whatever you believe, and whatever kind of week you are having.

One thing worth saying plainly. I set what this page is — the voice, the rules, the things it will never do. The three pieces are written to that every morning by a machine, and every quotation is checked before it goes anywhere. Nothing goes out that I would not put my name to.

No judgement. Just love.
